Shouhang High-Tech Empowers the First Batch of National "Desert, Gobi and Sandy Land" Key Projects | The 100MW Solar Thermal Project of Geermu by China Three Gorges New Energy Achieves Stable Full-load Operation

Time:2026-01-28

On January 23, 2026, the 100MW tower-type molten salt photothermal power generation project of Three Gorges Energy, in which Shouhang High-tech was a key member of the consortium, successfully achieved full-load stable operation of 100MW. All parameters of the grid-connected tests completed by the unit precisely met the design standards. This milestone achievement not only indicates that the project has fully acquired the long-term and stable power supply capability, but also represents an important practice for Shouhang High-tech in responding to the national policy for the large-scale development of photothermal power generation and assisting in the construction of the "Sand Gobi Desert" new energy base. It demonstrates the company's technological leadership and engineering performance fulfillment strength in the field of photothermal energy storage.

As one of the first "Sandgash Desert" projects designated by the country, the 100MW photothermal project of China Three Gorges Energy is located in the Wutumen Mountain Solar Power Generation Base in Geermu City, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province. This area, with an average annual sunshine duration of over 3,000 hours, is a prime energy resource region and is becoming a crucial battlefield for the construction of China's new power system.

The total investment of the project amounts to 1.648 billion yuan (including tax). It will build a 1×100MW molten salt tower-type concentrated solar power generation facility, equipped with an 8-hour long-term molten salt storage system. The total collecting area of the mirror field reaches 747,550 square meters. The 210-meter-high heat absorption tower stands on the Gobi Desert, and over 6400 solar tracking mirrors form a spectacular "following-the-sun matrix". After the project is put into operation, the annual designed power generation capacity can reach 227.1 million kilowatt-hours. It can save 69,240 tons of standard coal annually, reduce 188,950 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of planting 6.3 million mature trees. This not only effectively alleviates the problem of "rejection of solar and wind power" in the region, but also provides full-cycle clean power guarantee for nearly 190,000 households, injecting strong impetus into Qinghai's efforts to build a national clean energy demonstration province.

Throughout the entire project construction process, Shanghang Hi-tech undertook the design, equipment supply, installation, commissioning and operation support services for key components such as the mirror field concentrating and collecting heat system, the core heat absorber, and the molten salt thermal storage device. With its full-chain technical services, it ensured the smooth progress of the project.

In response to the extreme environmental conditions prevalent in the Golmud region—including high altitude, severe cold, frequent and intense sandstorms, and low solar irradiance during winter—Shanghang Hi-tech has successfully implemented a suite of independently developed technological innovations, drawing upon over two decades of expertise in photothermal energy storage. Key achievements include: (1) a 2.7-kilometer ultra-large-scale heliostat field intelligent control system, capable of millimeter-precision tracking and coordinated solar concentration; (2) a high-efficiency mirror-cleaning vehicle that completes full-field cleaning in under 50 seconds; and (3) a one-button automated preheating and molten salt charging system that achieves thermal readiness within 10 minutes. These solutions effectively address operational and maintenance challenges posed by harsh, sandy environments, significantly enhancing equipment reliability and operational stability. Consequently, they deliver critical support for project-level cost optimization and performance enhancement. Importantly, these innovations not only ensure robust and uninterrupted plant operation under extreme climatic conditions but also demonstrate China’s full technological autonomy and controllability in core photothermal power generation systems.

As the core force of the consortium, Shouhang High-tech worked closely with China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., China Electric Power Construction Group Sichuan Engineering Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Survey and Design Research Institute Co., Ltd., strictly controlling the quality and progress of the project. They successfully overcame a number of industry challenges such as winter construction in high-altitude areas and equipment debugging in extreme environments, and achieved continuous and stable load-bearing operation for 6 hours in 2025. The achievement of full-load operation further verified the maturity and reliability of Shouhang High-tech's photothermal energy storage technology in complex scenarios, providing a replicable and scalable engineering model for the industry.

A relevant official from Shouhang Hi-Tech stated that the successful operation of the 100MW concentrated solar power project in Golmud is another significant test of the company's technical strength and engineering capabilities. It precisely aligns with the core deployment of Document No. 1645 of the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Energy, which states "support the configuration of concentrated solar power in large-scale new energy bases in the 'Sand Gobi Desert' area and enhance the regulation capacity of the bases." As an active practitioner of the national strategy for the large-scale development of concentrated solar power, the implementation of this project provides practical reference and a modest contribution to achieving the core goal of the document, which is "to strive for an installed capacity of concentrated solar power of approximately 15 million kilowatts by 2030," as well as the development requirement of "electricity cost being basically the same as that of coal-fired power and technology reaching international leadership."

In the future, Shouhang Hi-tech will continue to focus on the research and development of core technologies for solar thermal energy storage, delve deeply into the innovation and cost reduction of high-parameter and large-capacity equipment, continuously optimize the "concentrated collection + efficient thermal storage" full-chain solution, deeply respond to the policies for the large-scale and market-oriented development of solar thermal power generation, actively participate in the construction of "sand dunes and deserts" new energy bases and the integrated projects of power generation, grid, load and storage, and help build an "photovoltaic + solar thermal" integrated clean energy system. With concrete actions, it will promote China's solar thermal power generation industry to enter the international leading ranks and continuously contribute the strength of Shouhang to the realization of the "dual carbon" goal and the construction of a new energy system.
